Book Promotion - How about Oprah Show

One of my book coaching clients sent me an amazing story of how his friend got on Oprah and Friends, Oprah Winfrey XM radio show.

I know other people who were called to be in the Oprah show as well. Sometimes it works and the team actually shows up, sometimes not. E 'TV Land producers are inclined to change something at the last minute.

One thing I noticed by those who know who Oprah calls: Do not seek it out with publicity stunts. The people I know who have tried seemingly every trick they can think, have not yet obtained. (Yet.)

Most of those who end up talking about Oprah did dream of having his own show. Oprah followed with genuine interest and admiration, often for years. They were in tune with Oprah and what she's doing. In many cases, were the audience of Oprah!

If they were experts, they also knew how to present well on TV. They had been on TV before. They had a message that Oprah knew it would be interesting to his audience, and knew how to deliver that message in a clear, entertaining way.

Make no mistake, Oprah knows her audience, inside and out. And 'his number one goal to speak to their needs and to entertain them.

If you want to get on any of the shows of Oprah, you have to have his way. Listen - it still tells you how! Go to Oprah's website and see a list of ideas that show you're looking for. Fill out the forms that match your story with what they want. Is true on it.

I heard interviews with former Oprah producers, and say what I said above. They also know how to spot insincerity instantly. If you do not actually have a story to tell that fits what Oprah is all about, but I'm just trying to get on the show for his own gain, you do not have a chance. An occupational hazard for people like Oprah Winfrey really famous is that people try to use for their own gain. I am convinced that she and her producers smell that a mile away.

If you want to get on Oprah's show, you must do two things.

First, his nearby studio. Subscribe to his newsletter. Read her journal. Do not just watch her show-study. Note the different formats it uses. What can you see the audience, from what we see, hear, watch? Do not forget the ads give you the clues to who her audience.

Also note: What the experts like? How to use "real people" stories? Where might fit?

Visit his Web site as often as possible and watch carefully what they are looking for. Respond appropriately, making sure to follow their guidelines for word count, etc.

When you share your story, make sure it matches what they want, is credible, genuine, and as dramatic as you can honestly do. Do not overdo it. Remember, this is to create an amusing sight. Nobody cares about your book, your business, or you. They care about your story, if it can inspire, educate, assist or otherwise benefit the people who watch or listen to Oprah.

If you are an expert, how can you talk about your experience to the audience of Oprah? Do not have your "hook" ready, and has worked with other media? You gotta be comfortable with the media doing a lot of radio and television already? You got the training course?

If you have an idea of your own, remember, what they're looking for is a whole show idea. Once I threw her on my book, Men in search of work and the women who love them. I gave her ideas for couples to have on other experts, everything. He never called, but I heard that was followed by a show similar to what I had proposed. (Hey, it happens. Frankly, I was not ready for his show at the time. In any case, could have been someone else's idea as well. Good ideas whose time has come tend to occur in more than one person any given period of time. However, I still like to think that ended up using the idea and have given!)

Another approach: Make enough noise around her so she feels about it and see you're right for her demographic. His company remains on top of what is happening in other media. They are looking for rising stars. You're supporting the same organizations that you support? What are you personally doing to African-American community in Chicago? If you're making enough noise in other areas who cares about what she is.

Spend your efforts with other sounds.

This sounds like a lot of work? Could be. After all, Oprah is the big leagues. Phase two is where the number comes into play: Be patient, diligent and persistent in One Step next.

If this all seems worth it to you, go for it! (If and when you get on Oprah use these tips, let me know!)...
