Do these common SEO mistakes?


Search engine optimization is in the minds of a lot of web marketing, and business owners these days, and with good reason. Search engine success can often turn a marginally profitable website a huge success.

But having a website that is visible to search engines is not the problem. The question is how you get there? More importantly, such errors can be avoided that might prevent you arrive? Here are some common mistakes search engine optimization that I see on company websites, and how you can avoid on your website.

Content such as graphics or PDF

When you put your words in graphic format (JPEG or GIF), these words become invisible to search engines. Sure, there are times when it is necessary, as when designing a logo. But if you use graphics as secondary headers on your web pages, you're wasting a good opportunity SEO.

Often, I see keyword-rich headings and sub-headings in a graphical format, when you look exactly the same could be achieved with plain text formatted by a stylesheet. It makes no sense to me.

The PDF files are another area where companies often deprive themselves of the search engine-friendly content. Let's say you have a news section on your site, and all 15 news link to PDF files. In this case, you have a page of web content readable and 15 PDF file (which search engines can not read or grading for you).

But if you made a separate web page with plain text for each story, you will have another 15 pages for search engines to crawl through and evaluate. You can still offer PDF files for people who prefer to download the story. But we offer in addition to the PDF page of plain text, not replacing it.

The lack of titles

In this usage, "title" refers to the item title within the HTML code that makes up a web page. The titles appear in three points: (1) at the top of the code for a particular web page, (2) in the blue title bar at the top of the web browser, and (3) above every list of a search engine page results (SERP).

The title element is an important part of search engine optimization because it tells search engines what the page is about. In fact, I would say that the title element is one of the two most important parts of a web page for SEO purposes.

But I can not count the number of corporate web sites I visited was missing key phrases in their page titles, missing in all our titles. If an old, well-established site with bad titles were suddenly to optimize all page titles with key phrases, that the site could easily double its traffic search engine in a few months.

Lack of information should be sufficient

Like most things in SEO, good content helps people as well as search engines. People need content to help them understand your products or services, to tell them what to do, and give them a sense of your overall brand and reputation. Search engines need content to understand what your site is all about. So, if your site lacks quality content, you are depriving the public two at once.

Non-descriptive hyperlinks

From SEO perspective, think of hyperlinks as text signs. They tell people and search engines where they are going, and what will they find when they get there. If most of the internal text links on your site using phrases like "click here" or "more information", you're missing another opportunity SEO.

If you have a text link that goes to a page on CRM software, do not label it "more information" - label "consulting CRM software" (or whatever is applicable). This helps people navigate better, and gives search engines a lot of clues about what your site is all about. The developers of search engines know that the hyperlinks in a site say a lot about your website theme or topic, so they built their algorithms with that in mind.
