Girl recovered from a brain tumor with an autologous blood from its own umbilical cord

As the family said in several media, the decision to preserve the cord blood stem cells has been their "best life insurance" and allowed them to see the birth of her daughter twice. The girl's parents did not hesitate when he learned they were expecting a child, were reported and opted to preserve the cord blood in a private bank.

This is the first case in Spain but not the only one in the world. Last September a smaller cancer survivor thanks to the nervous system, among other things, the transplant of her own cord blood. The patient is stable but still recovering from his illness, treatment with transplantation of peripheral blood stem cells and cord blood from the patient herself, has been able to recover the hematopoietic system of the child and think your condition is stabilized.

Cord blood in this case has been used for autologous transplantation (for the child herself) and this along with the domestic allogeneic (including family members, usually siblings), is what families choose to store the blood of umbilical cords of their children. The umbilical cord blood, can only be removed minutes after birth.

This blood is rich in hematopoietic stem cells and is currently used for organ transplant after intensive chemotherapy in various cancers. This type of drive applications from private banks, confirms once again what has been discussing in recent years, cord blood should be donated to the public system or stored in a private bank for a possible family autologous or allogeneic .

Regardless of the possible applications are currently investigating other possible uses in regenerative medicine hopefully allow us to expand the indications which currently has the umbilical cord blood. From IVIDA so it is recommended to parents save the cord blood of your child for being an excellent source of cells with which to make an autologous or allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation a matched sibling violence.
